India Pale Ales

Bitters
Slightly different from pale ales, bitters exhibit a golden brown colour, lightly carbonated, more heavily hopped and have undertones of citrus.

Delirium Tremens - Belgium
STRONG triple fermented blonde ale. How strong? 9% ABV. (The bottle is decorated with pink elephants...) Crisp, sweet fruit beginning, dry clean finish, with a quietly persistent alcohol attack.

Red Hook ESB - USA
The perfect pale ale for those who prefer a highly bitter brew; citrus character distinguishes the brew from Red Hook’s IPA.

Fuller’s ESB- Great Britain

Scottish Ales

Belhaven Wee Heavy - Scotland
Malt flavors predominate in this moderately dark beer. Smooth, lightly carbonated; an excellent example of Scottish ale style. This 17 oz. beer retains the term for its original small, or “wee” sized bottle.

Traquair House Ale - Scotland
A smooth, rich body with little carbonation; hearty with molasses character and moderate chewiness. Complex and full-bodied, this is one of the best in its style.

Skullsplitter - Scotland
Rich deep burnt-sienna color, satiny smooth texture. This sweet and exceptionally hearty ale takes its name from the legendary Scottish warrior, Thorfin Hauskuliuuf, the “skull-splitter.”

Dark Island - Scotland
A ripe, fruity nose, a colour of glorious ruby wine, a rich, dark cocoa flavor, followed by an exceptionally smooth, full malt palate make this an exotic, mysterious brew, worth savoring.

Old Peculier - Great Britain

With actual colour ranging between brown and golden ales, most reds are semi-sweet with a grand, malty flavor balanced by a mild hoppiness.

The Red Mac Gregor - Scotland

A great example of the red ale style; moderate carbonation, with gentle hop flavor stunningly balanced against a semi-sweet malt backdrop.

Dogfish Head Raison d’Etre - USA
A mahogany ale so named for the color imparted by beet sugar and green raisins used in brewing. A unique flavor that seems to dance playfully, then mellow on the taste buds. (pronounced RAY-zon de-TRAY)

Rogue Dead Guy Ale - USA
Hoppy fizziness at first, then a light toasted malt flavor emerges, but does not overpower a definite honey flavor.

Dixie Crimson Voodoo - USA
A deep red ale from Louisiana, with a smooth malt palate and subtle hop undertones; very easy drinking.

Magic Hat Humble Patience - USA
Another artful creation by our friends at Magic Hat. A slow-brewed Irish-style red, deep and thick as time, begging the question, “How long does it take for ‘soon’ to be ‘now?’”

Red Wolf - USA
This brew is similar in carbonation, texture and hop content to many American lagers, but with a definitive “red” character to the malt.

Sarah Hughes’ Dark Ruby - Great Britain
An interesting bottle conditioned red ale, which imparts a powerful yeasty grip while retaining its malty caress. We adore this one.

Porter
The porter style was born in London in the 1730’s as a substitute for a popular mixture of 3 separate beers. The 3 beer mixture was created by a pub proprietor as a strong, hearty drink for ship porters and manual laborers, hence the name. Coloured by sweet, roasted, unmalted barley.

Samuel Smith’s Taddy Porter - Great Britain
A delightful wine aroma is replaced by a mild caramel flavor; full bodied and slightly tart, the finish is semi-dry and strong. One of the best we’ve tried.

Anchor Porter - USA
Mellow and sweet with a burnt taste that tends towards bitter; balanced by a molasses chewiness, this porter is rich, dark and satisfying. An excellent American porter.

Fuller’s London Porter - Great Britain
Semi-sweet and full-bodied roasted flavor is dominant at first sip, giving way to a gentle spice and hop finish. Another in a line of great brews from Fuller’s.

Pripp’s Carnegie Porter - Sweden

This brew is worthy of being called “true art in a bottle.” An extra dark roast creates rich character, yet the drink remains surprisingly light in body. A remarkable brew indeed.

Otter Creek Stovepipe Porter - USA
A deep color with a strong roasted flavor; unique herbal nuance is present throughout.

Nightmare Porter - Great Britain
We’ve rarely experienced a brew quite like the Nightmare. A smooth, well-balanced beer with a creamy head and a startlingly intense roasted malt flavor.

Kostrizer Schwarzbier Black - Germany
Semi-sweet and very dark with a medium body, gentle hoppiness and mild aftertaste. Good enough to win even the most demanding beer drinkers. (pronounced KOS-trit-ser SHWARTZ-beer)

Xingu - Brazil
The famed Brazilian “Black Beer;” almost Zen-like balance between bitterness and sweetness on a mellow palate, yet silkier than one might expect. A must try in the style. (pronounced SHIN-goo)

Samuel Smith’s Imperial Stout - Great Britain
A wine/berry aroma greets the nose; just the right amount of “tang” in this full-bodied and robust beer. One of the best imperial stouts we’ve tried.

Victory Storm King Imperial Stout - USA
At first hops predominate, then give way to a full roasted malt flavor; intense and smooth, we’ve noticed hints of espresso. An impressive member of its class. Highly recommended.

Young’s Double Chocolate Stout - Great Britain

This stout is brewed using chocolate malt and real chocolate, resulting in a rich flavor and well-balanced texture and body. Fantastic.

Samuel Smith’s Oatmeal Stout - Great Britain
Full bodied but not filling with a wonderful burnt oat flavor. Smooth, almost silky, the oatmeal imparts sweetness without being cloying.

Young’s Oatmeal Stout - Great Britain
A contender for “best in class.” A roasted flavor predominates with a subtle chocolate malt nuance; well-rounded and semi dry with a beautiful black-brown color.

Guinness - Ireland
Mild bitterness quickly gives way to gentle roasted malt elegance. Balanced in both taste and texture; quite possibly the best head of any stout.

Murphy’s Irish Stout - Ireland
Soft and creamy, almost velvety; initial sharp hoppiness fades to a mellow burnt malt flavor with hints of fine wine.

Magic Hat Heart of Darkness - USA
Inky-black like liquid velvet, this dense oatmeal stout cloaks the palate with deep roasted nuances, floating above an undercurrent of bittersweet chocolate.

Mississippi Mud Lager - USA
Not syrupy thick, as the name suggests, but rather a light bodied copper-tan brew. Well-balanced with good carbonation, a gentle hoppiness is balanced by smooth malt. Bottled in its cheek-pinchingly cute signature moonshine jug.

Dixie Blackened Voodoo - USA
The infamous Louisiana potion which survived a threat by America’s bible belt to ban the “blasphemous “ brew. With its rich reddish-brown glow, sweet molasses and a misty fruit nuance make their presence known from the first sip.

Old Scratch - USA
A copper-tan lager, mild hops and smooth malt make this a well-balanced, easy drinking beer. Check out the freaky label art on this one.

Molson Golden - Canada
Crisp and hoppy with a good, creamy head; light bodied with good carbonation.

Dos Equis - Mexico
Mild and pleasant, this well-balanced beer retains its carbonation throughout. Arguably the smoothest Mexican lager.

Corona - Mexico

Refreshing and crisp, excellent carbonation and easy drinking with or without lime.

Red Stripe - Jamaica

Harp - Ireland

Samuel Smith’s Pure Brew Lager - Great Britain
Full bodied and well-balanced; a rich hop flavor is immediate and pleasant, complimented by a mellow malt. This brewery can do no wrong.

Pilsener Urquell - Czech Republic
The first in the style and still the standard for pilseners. Crisp, flowery hops, aggressive carbonation and smooth aftertaste. A classic.

Singha - Thailand

Smooth, with a sour (but pleasant) citrus character. Gentle, tingly carbonation.

Brooklyn Lager - USA
A Vienna style lager that has a toasted malt flavor and gentle sweetness with aggressive hops and a fresh, floral finish.

Heineken - Holland
The number one imported beer. Good body and carbonation, with excellent hop flavor.

Grolsch - Holland
A great full-bodied pilsener with sharp hop flavor and malt aftertaste, served in its signature swing-top bottle.

Foster’s - Australia
Fresh and crisp with a full palate and smooth body; hops are pronounced but not bitter. Served in its trademark 25 oz. “oil can,” this bushman’s favorite will quench even the toughest thirst.

Moretti - Italy
A mild, light bodied brew; semi-sweet and smooth, this is a very drinkable beer.

Rheingold - USA

Kirin Lager - Japan
A dry beer that is characterized by a gentle hoppiness; light bodied and well-balanced.

Sapporo - Japan
Light body and lightly carbonated; dry with grain flavors giving way to a bitter hoppiness. For those who appreciate a dry beer.

Amstel Light - Holland
Surprisingly pronounced hop and malt palate with excellent effervescence.

Coors - USA
A great stitch of gold in the tapestry of Americana. (move over, Mr. Hemmingway…)Some light malt flavor, with a hint of hoppiness. This is a well-carbonated, dare we say “swig-able” beer.

Miller Lite - USA
A mellow malt is evident with a gentle hop flavor in the aftertaste. Tastes great, less filling, holds a small bunch of flowers, makes a dandy paperweight, and remains the weapon of choice in many low-budget action films.

A heavy concentration of wheat malt and an in bottle fermentation process imparts high carbonation and fruity/spicy nuances.

Pyramid Hefe-Weizen - USA
Intense wheat tartness gives way to fruit punctuation. Excellent carbonation and light body make this a great summer beer. (A favorite of our beloved Sphinx!)

Schneider-Weisse - Germany

Yeast predominates at first, followed by a spiciness reminiscent of cloves. Cloudy as a result of bottle conditioning, the aggressive carbonation remains constant.

Tucher Dunkel-Weisse - Germany

On the darker side for the style, this beer boasts a hearty roasted flavor which offsets a platform of rich yeast .

Blue Moon Belgian White - USA

An American interpretation of the classic Belgian white; fragrant and light with hints of citrus. Excellent carbonation.

Aventinus Double Bock - Germany
Unfiltered and unpasteurized this complex brew evokes the taste of chocolate and fruit with a clove finish. Almost a meal in itself.

Aass Bock - Norway
A gentle, fruit aroma at first with a sweet caramel flavor against a mellow burnt malt palate. (pronounced “OSS bock. WE know what you were thinking…)

Tucher Doppelbock - Germany
A sweet toasted malt palate predominates; nuances of dried fruit and spice are subtle, but noticeable.

Celebrator - Germany
Dark, sweet, toasted with a deep, nutty taste; whispy fruit notes appear. This full bodied beer is robust and flavorful; big and powerful; not a beer for the novice.

Abbey and Trappist Ales
Dark and full flavored, these beers trace their lineage to Trappist monasteries throughout Europe. These hearty ales were designed to be “liquid bread” for monks to enjoy during Lenten fastings. Only five can still use the name Trappist.

Chimay Rouge Trappist Ale - Belgium
Considered by many the best of its style; sweet and soft initially, followed by intense yeast character offset by a gentle fruitiness. A must try.

Duvel Belgian Ale - Belgium
Its name is a corruption of the Flemmish word for “devil.” Subtle nuances of fruit and wine are balanced against a deceptively heavy malt flavor. Delicious.

Abbaye des Rocs - Belgium
Impressive and stately as an ancient cathedral in its 25.4 oz. bottle, this selection is noticeablly sweet at first, giving way to a heavy malt flavor, and a perfect yeasty finish. (pronounced “a-BAY deh-ROCK)

Ommegang Abbey Ale - USA
A deep red color with a big fluffy head. Layered sweetness with hints of chocolate and licorice. Words barely do this choice justice.

Orval Trappist Ale - Belgium

Complex and rich with undertones of wine and perfume. Simply, one of the best in its class.

St. Feuillien – Belgium

Majestic. A flavorsome mixture of ripe fruits and light malt, with just a touch of hoppy sharpness. A brew that could only be the product of divine inspiration. (pronounced SAINT FOO-yen)

Barley Wine Ales
Very high in alcohol content, these dark ales have a pronounced malt sweetness and hop bitterness that varies from medium to high.

Young’s Old Nick Barley Wine - Great Britain
With the Devil himself grinning from the label, Old Nick’s unique blend of yeasts produce mellow fruit undertones; less alcohol and carbonation than most barley wines, but no sacrifice in taste.

Victory Old Horizontal - Great Britain
A strong, sweet ale balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness. High alcohol content; too many and you’ll be snoozing as deeply as the sleepy quarter-moon on the label.

Seasonal Brews
Winter brews are usually characterized by the addition of spices such as clove, coriander and nutmeg and tend to be heavy in taste and body. Summer brews are generally lighter and flavored with citrus and/or lighter spices.

Samichlaus - Switzerland (Guinness Book Record Holder—World’s Strongest Brew 14%)
Closer to wine than beer, this seasonal is brewed every December (the name means Santa Claus) and is aged for a whole year. A bit tart at first sip, sweetness and caramel flavors emerge, giving way to a brandy-like finish. One of the most complex beers on our list; words alone will not do it justice. (pronounced SAMMY-clowse)

Magic Hat Hocus Pocus - USA
Unfiltered and glowing like summer sun-rays, with a aromatic malty sweetness that finishes dry and crisp. Try it with a juicy wedge of orange, and bask in the glory of a summer afternoon with nothing to do but smile.

Magic Hat Jinx - USA
Earthy, rich, and steeped in autumn’s magic. A golden coloured brew, its subtle notes dance on the palate with the gentleness of falling Maple leaves. A bit of peat-smoked Whiskey malt imparts a whisper of smoke reminiscent of autumn’s bonfires.

Magic Hat Heart of Darkness - USA
Inky black like liquid velvet, this rich dense oatmeal stout cloaks the palate with powerful, deep roasted nuances, floating above an undercurrent of bittersweet chocolate. (Originally intended as a winter seasonal, the demand for this exceptional stout has made it available year-round. Enjoy.)

Magic Hat Miss Bliss - USA
The spring offering from our friends at Magic Hat. Miss Bliss ushers in the season with a dry, malty ale, wrapped in a delicate web of flavorful spices. Fresh ground coriander and orange peel are two key ingredients that make this artful brew so unique.

Lunacy - USA
At 7.7% ABV, Lunacy is forceful, like the pull of the full moon. A refreshing brew, risen from a marriage of sweet Belgian malts, English hops, fresh ground coriander, and shimmering notes of fruit.

Perkuno’s Hammer - USA
A majestic Baltic porter forged from Munich and chocolate malts (and some other secrets). Dark, mysterious yet confidently demure, it’s been described as a “trainwreck between a doublebock and a stout.” Named for Perkuno, the Baltic thunder god.

Baltus - USA
A massive hybrid beer (it’s brewed at top-fermenting temperatures using bottom fermenting English malts). Complex meshwork of flavors make this powerful brew difficult to do justice with words alone.

Two Druids Gruit Ale - USA
Honey, yarrow, sweet gale, crushed nutmeg, wild rosemary and a weave of assorted medieval spices flavor this tribute to the ancients. A meld of the esoterica of the past and the science of the present, Two Druids is the answer when you ask, “What do you have that’s different?”

Steam Beer
This style, now trademarked exclusively by the Anchor Brewing Co., originated in California in the late 1800’s. The beer was brewed in uncommonly shallow vessels which hissed and steamed during brewing, lending a unique moniker to the style.

Anchor Steam - USA
Full-bodied with hoppy bite and bitterness. Excellent head and carbonation. We love it.

L’Eau Benite - Canada
Bitter at first, this brew, named “Holy Water” in French, mellows quickly and a light citrus undertone compliments the hearty yeast flavor. (pronounced “o ben-EET)

Don de Dieu - Canada
“Gift of God”, as the name suggests. A wine like aroma is pronounced at first, giving way to a grainy, malty finish. Tight carbonation, reminiscent of champagne.

Lindemans Peche Lambic – Belgium
A positively yummy dessert-style drink, sweetened with the flavor of juicy, sun-ripened peaches. Delicious by itself, or over ice. (pronounced PESH)

Clovis - United Kingdom
A unique beer; clove flavor is strong and spicy, but balanced by a sweetness from the malt. For those with a sense of adventure… be prepared for a flavor unlike any you’ve tried before.

Alba Scots Pine Ale - Scotland
A scotch ale brewed with pine and spruce needles. The adjuncts give a uniquely mellow sweetness; inspired by the Celtic belief that evergreens represent eternal life. Very unusual, but very enjoyable.

Purple Haze - USA
A delightful wheat beer made with sun-ripened raspberries, added after fermentation. Purple color and delicious sweetness make this one a stand-apart.

Incredible. We fell in love at our first sip. This fermented honey drink is the oldest alcoholic brew in the world, it’s name appearing in many a verse of medieval literature. Reminiscent of a dry white wine at first, mead has an ethereal sweetness and smooth body. Delicious over ice. A must try.

The best we’ve enjoyed; crisp, tart and refreshing. A wonderful summertime thirst quencher.

Hard cider made of golden apples; aged in oak for exceptional smoothness.
