The porter style was born in London in the 1730s as
a substitute for a popular mixture of 3 separate beers.
The 3 beer mixture was created by a pub proprietor as a

Trappist Ales
Dark and full flavored, these beers trace their lineage
to Trappist monasteries throughout Europe. These hearty
ales were designed to be liquid bread for monks
to enjoy during Lenten fastings. Only five can still use
the name Trappist.
Chimay Rouge Trappist Ale - Belgium
Considered by many the best of its style; sweet and soft
initially, followed by intense yeast character offset by
a gentle fruitiness. A must try.
Duvel Belgian Ale - Belgium
Its name is a corruption of the Flemmish word for devil.
Subtle nuances of fruit and wine are balanced against a
deceptively heavy malt flavor. Delicious.
Abbaye des Rocs - Belgium
Impressive and stately as an ancient cathedral in its 25.4
oz. bottle, this selection is noticeablly sweet at first,

Ommegang Abbey Ale - USA

This style, now trademarked exclusively by the Anchor Brewing
Co., originated in California in the late 1800s. The
beer was brewed in uncommonly shallow vessels which hissed
and steamed during brewing, lending a unique moniker to
